Who took the most iconic Mick Jagger photo?

The story of the man behind the lens

Jim Marshall

Jim Marshall was a maverick with a camera: an outsider who captured the heights of Rock'n'Roll, and the seismic changes of an era. From the Beatles to Hendrix, from Woodstock to the civil rights movement, Marshall immortalised some of the most iconic moments of the sixties and seventies. In 2014 Jim Marshall earned a posthumous Trustees Award from the Grammy Awards, leaving behind an immense body of work which spanned several decades.

The Palace Laundry Photo

In 1972 Marshall took the now legendary picture of Mick wearing the Palace Laundry t-shirt whilst in LA covering the Rolling Stones for Life magazine. Marshall's pictures always reflect the affection he had for the artists and you can see this in the pictures he took of Mick. It’s no accident if Marshall's pictures seem musical because, as he said,  “I see the music".
